McConnaughy

McConnaughy is a name of a family that traces its origin in medieval times. McConnaughy originated in Scotland. They inhabited the western coast of Scotland and the desolate islands of Hebrides. The name McConnaughy came from a personal name Roberts. The senior branches of the family tree, known as Clan Donnachaidh, were the hereditary abbots of Dunkeld. They descended from Iona. Abbot Duncan of Dunkeld led the warriors bearing the reliquary of St. Columba in 964. He was killed in the battle of 964. After his death his grandson, Abbot Crinan of Dunkeld married the king’s daughter. Crinan was buried at the Isle of Iona. The Isle of Iona is known as the burial place of Scotland kings. His stepson was King Duncan I of Scotland. Later he was killed by Macbeth.

The descendants of McConnaughy were first found in Athol. King Duncan’s younger son, Maelmor was the Earl of Athol. His grandson Earl Henry was the father of Conan. Conan of Glenerochie, the owner of vast territories in that area was the first chief of the Robertsons. He gave his name to Clan Connchaidh or Duncan. The successor of Conan participated in the army of King Bruce of Bannockburn with his Clan in 1314 against English. For this patriotism and his loyal support to the Scottish King, his grandson Robert of Struan was granted the barony in 1451.

Spelling variations are abundant in medieval names. The history written in that era recorded the name as per their sound and did not go by the spelling rules. Thus a lot of spelling variations is noticed in the name McConnaughy. So it has been spelled like MacConachie, MacConaghy, MacDonnachie, MacConckey, MacDunnachie, MacConkey, Maclnroy, McLagan, McRelbert and many more.

During the American War of Independence many citizens travelled to the north of Canada under the tag of United Empire loyalists. American families of Scottish origin recovered much of their lost heritage through Clan societies. Post War of Independence investigations about origins of North American families revealed that immigrant bearing the name MacConnaughy or some variant mentioned above include Daniel Robertson. He settled in Virginia in 1716. He came along with Francis, Isabella, James, John and Donald. Alexander, Archibald, Duncan George, Henry, James, Daniel, Charles, Robert, Thomas and William Robertson all came and settled in Philadelphia between 1800 and 1870.

The most famous McConnaughy of today is William Douglas McConnaughy. He is a renowned tax relief associate. His company McConnaughy, CPA has helped many people to deal with their tax liability problem.
